Back pain

Back pain is a common problem that affects most people at some point in their life. It usually feels like an ache, tension or stiffness in your back.  However it can be severe and debilitating, making it impossible to perform daily tasks.  There are many possible causes of back pain and it is very important that a thorough assessment identifies the cause and therefore the solution.

Back pain is not generally caused by a serious condition and, in most cases it can be easily remedied.  Backache is most common in the lower back, although it can be felt anywhere along your spine, from your neck down to your hips and can include other conditions such as:

  • whiplash
  • shoulder pain
  • frozen shoulder
  • ankylosing spondylitis
  • slipped disc
  • sciatica

If you have back pain, you should try to remain as active as possible and continue with your daily activities. In the past, doctors recommended rest for back pain, but most experts now agree that being inactive for long periods is bad for your back.  With physiotherapy the goal is to accurately assess the cause of pain and then prescribe the correct type activity to alleviate it and manage the on-going symptoms. With the situation under control we can set about treating the causes of your problem so that it doesn’t come back.
